Just like every other parent new to homeschooling, there is a myirad of questions and concerns that arise and for me, I found it was a case of reading or listening to other’s experiences that helped me confirm that I actually was capable of home educating my kids. If I’m being completely honest, It took me about 6 years to accept that I could actually make this a reality and dive into homeschoooling and to fully accept that there were many ways of education and main stream school was simply just one way – not THE only way.
As we are based in Victoria, Australia, I will document the process as we found it living here.
REGISTERING TO HOMESCHOOL
It is free to register for homeschooling and you must do this through the Victorian Registration and Qualifications Authority. All of the relevant information you need is on their website as well as learning templates which are a fantastic resource when creating a learning plan. I found going through this process of writing the learning plan was great for me take the time to really think about the direction and made me really pause to think about how I wanted to the year ahead to go and what my children were interested in. Ofcourse, you are submitting to the VRQA a guide only and like all good plans, they will change and the VRQA completely understand this also.
LEARNING SPACE SET UPS
This really comes down to you and what works in your home. There are some pretty impressive home set ups I’ve seen. But ultimately you need a space where your child can sit and do their activites as well as store the resources you may use. I find the more organised I am, the less overwhelmed I feel.
